1990–91 Football League First Division

The Football League First Division in 1990/91 was the 92nd season of the Football League First Division as the highest English football league. It began on 25 August 1990 and ended on 20 May 1991. Spite of a deduction of two points Arsenal won his tenth championship now and distanced the defending champions Liverpool to seven points. Of the climbers Leeds United, Sheffield United, Sunderland AFC, only the club from Sunderland could not hold and went straight back into the Second Division. Due to a subsequent league expansion from 20 to 22 teams for the 1991/92 season only one other team was forced to retire with bottom club Derby County; new this should come out of the Second Division Oldham Athletic, West Ham United, Sheffield Wednesday and Notts County.

A total of 467 players were used, with the Arsenal with 19, the least and Coventry City with 30 mustered the most players in league games. 103 newcomers were offset by 91 footballers who most recently came into play in the 1990/91 season.

As regards the specific arrangements prior to the introduction of the Premier League, there is lack of clarity, all the players with an asterisk (*) have been provided which have received no champion medal presumably because of their small contribution.
