1948–49 Football League

The Football League First Division 1948/49, was the 50th season of the Football League First Division as the highest English football league. The Portsmouth FC won with five points clear of the chasing Manchester United and Derby County the first English championship in their history. Both newly promoted Birmingham City and Newcastle United were able to get the class; instead had to play the course in the Second Division Preston North End and Sheffield United. These two teams should be in the following season replaced by the two second division team FC Fulham and West Bromwich Albion.

A total of 515 players were used, with the Portsmouth 18 the least and Everton with 30 mustered the most players in league games. 130 newcomers were offset by 110 footballers who most recently came into play in the season 1948/49.

The champion team of Portsmouth

In the following list, all players were listed who came to Portsmouth in a league game for use during the 1949/50 season. It must be noted that in most cases a minimum number of games will be provided in English football to accept the official champion medal allowed. As regards the specific arrangements prior to the introduction of the Premier League, there is lack of clarity, all the players with an asterisk (*) have been provided which have received no champion medal presumably because of their small contribution. In brackets the number of bets as well as the goals achieved are called.
