Gideon Granger

Gideon Granger ( born July 19, 1767 in Suffield, Hartford County, Connecticut, † December 31, 1822 in Canandaigua, New York ) was an American politician.

Granger was a graduate of Yale University and initially pursue a career as a lawyer. From 1792 to 1801 he was a member of the House of Connecticut. From 1801 to 1814 he was then Postmaster General of the United States ( Postmaster General ) under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison; thus he completed the longest serving Postmaster General in American history. After his time in the Cabinet he was still sitting in the Senate from New York.

His son Francis Granger was also later Postmaster General.

The Gideon - family home is now a museum.
