Harry Vardon

Harry Vardon ( born May 9, 1870 in Grouville, Jersey, Channel Islands, † March 20, 1937 in Totteridge, Hertfordshire ) was one of the most famous English professional golfer and a seven-time major winner.

In childhood, growing up on the island of Jersey, he played little golf. As a teenager, then inspired him, his older brother, Tom, and at the age of 20 years Vardon eventually became a professional golfer. He was the first of his profession, who played in knickerbockers.

In 1896, Vardon won his first of six Open Championships and 1900 he was the first international golf celebrity who traveled to the United States. Vardon played there more than 80 matches and won at the U.S. Open that year. Twenty years later, when the age of fifty, Vardon won second place in this major.

For a lot of attention, also the record race tours through the United States of America attended together with his good friend Ted Ray in the years 1913 and 1920. In this context, we spoke of the duel " Broadsword " ( Ray ) against " Rapier " ( Vardon ) since Ted Ray very dynamic struck on the balls while Harry Vardon, in contrast, played a particularly elegant and controlled.

In his later years Vardon designed golf course architect as several courses in the UK. He was also active as an instructor and author of golf books.

After his death, the PGA of America created the Vardon Trophy, which is given annually to the PGA TOUR player with the lowest stroke average. The PGA European Tour draws the winner of the money list at the end of the season with the Harry Vardon Trophy.

1974 Harry Vardon was among the first golfers who were included in the newly created World Golf Hall of Fame.
