Herschdorf is a town in Ilm-Kreis in Thuringia in Germany.

Geography

Herschdorf lies on a plateau between the 808 meter high highlands in the west and the Schwarzadal in the east. The area is characterized by high and relatively scarcely wooded pastures. The place is about 650 meters above sea level. Herschdorf is a scattered village. North of Herschdorf is the source of the gutter, south rises the squire creek, a tributary of the Schwarza.

History

Herschdorf was first mentioned in 1370 as Hertwygestorf. According to legend, the ruler of Herschdorf to have had four sons, who formed their own villages. Albert founded Allersdorf, Willmersdorfer Wilhelm, Friedrich Friedersdorf and Gilbert Gillersdorf.

The place belonged to the County of Schwarzburg- Rudolstadt and Schwarzburg was in office. Rights at the site also had the monastery and the monastery Paulinzella Stadtilm and the Hospital in King 's Lake. The inhabitants Herschdorfs formerly lived primarily on the cultivation of flax and the transit trade, and later also from Olitätenhandel. Herschdorf lay on an important trade route, which managed the local teamsters to Mecklenburg in the North and in the South Tyrol. 1676 counted about 310 inhabitants, in 1863 there were 614 with the construction of the railway and the associated industrialization broke transport and his business as well as the processing of flax as a source of income away. Coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on 8 December 1994 by the Thuringian State Office of Administration.

Blazon: " Azure, a stag border on a silver mountain, accompanied on the top left of three ( 2:1) silver lime leaves. "

The deer is a canting symbol in volksetymologischer interpretation of the name and was taken at the same time because of this former seal. The mountain symbolizes the "Long Mountain". For the three districts, the three linden leaves, which are supposed to symbolize the natural location of the community at the same time. The former membership of the place to the dominions of the Counts of Schwarzburg is illustrated by the tincture of the emblem.

The coat of arms was designed by Frank heraldist Diemar.

Culture and sights

The local church dates from the Baroque period, its tower dates back to an older predecessor building of the Gothic period.

The cultural life is shaped by traditional Thuringian customs. In Herschdorf every year three fair events. The best known of the " Kermsen " so-called is the well-known far beyond the region, every year on the last of July and first week of August takes place youth fair.

In addition to the youth fair also takes place a " fair men " since 1986. In the new millennium also a " fair women " was celebrated for the first time.

Economy and infrastructure

The economy Herschdorfs was formerly dominated by weaving and lower glass industry. 1862 opened the family brewery Hilmar wrought servant, whose beer was popular throughout the region. Today there are in place a commercial area on which some smaller companies have settled.
