Geography

Gillersdorf lies to the east of the 808 m high mountain in Langen about 680 meters. South of the town extends the Großbreitenbacher plateau, which is forested and little was previously used mainly for sheep farming and the cultivation of flax. Near Gillersdorf stems from the Breitenbach, a tributary of the Schwarza, the Großbreitenbach its name.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1452.

Gillersdorf 1682 was affected by witch hunts. A woman was caught in a witch trial.

In 1825 a fire destroyed about half of all homes in Gillersdorf. The village used to living mainly on the weaving. 1843, Gillersdorf 495 inhabitants. Even then, many people emigrated because of the ruling in Gillersdorf poverty. In 1872 the sports club, which today is called SV Gillersdorf 1872 eV, founded. The local fire department was established in 1876. The village won the 2003 second place in Thuringia wide competition "Our village is beautiful ."

The name was Gillersdorf from the production of Gillen (small baking or battle troughs made ​​of wood), which was a major source of income in the early years of the existence of the place.

Economy and Transport

Gillersdorf was shaped over centuries of weaving as a dominant industry. Furthermore, were degraded in place until 1911 and 1934 slate and wooden toys produced in the only factory of the place. In GDR times, most Giller villages worked in Großbreitenbach.

Roads connect the village with Großbreitenbach, Bohlen and Herschdorf. From 1882 to 1998, the town had a railway connection to the Ilmenau- Großbreitenbacher Railway over the station Neustadt- Gillersdorf to the High fir, lying about 2 km south-west of the village.
