Geography
Penne Witz is located in the northern foothills of the Thuringian Forest between the highlands in the south and the monastery forest Paulinzella in the north. To the east of the village lies the Rinnetal, west of the Gehrener wetland. Due to the concern district west of Pennewitz the watershed between Ilm and Saale runs.

History
By 1920 Pennewitz belonged to the Official Mitre in the Principality of Schwarzburg- Sondershausen. Then it belonged until 1952 to the district Arnstadt, 1952-1994 Ilmenau to the circle and since the Ilm-Kreis.
