However, this settlement appears to be received again, and the origin of the present-day village lies rather in the creation of a glassworks in 1698. Thus Neustadt is one of the youngest places of Ilm -Kreis. To the glassworks settled on both sides of the Rennsteig to loggers and Köhler.

The place was therefore divided into two parts until 1920. The northeast part of the Rennsteig belonged to the Principality of Schwarzburg- Sondershausen ( supremacy ), the southwest part of the Rennsteig belonged to the Duchy of Saxe -Meiningen (Official ice rink ). From 1739 until July 1, 1855 were the two places in terms of church and school, a community, by having church and pastor, school and teacher jointly. After the separation in 1855 in Neustadt was a second church. In addition, there were two schools, two volunteer fire departments, etc.

The glassworks in Neustadt does not seem to have acquired great importance and was abandoned in 1819. Other industries in the town were unprofitable, so that already in 1755 the temporary relocation of residents was considered to Mecklenburg. In the 19th century in particular, matches were made in Neustadt. After the industrialization emerged after 1900 a match factory, which closed down operations in 1927 again. After the Second World War, the match manufacture became briefly again economic significance and are soon outweighed the arisen since the 1930s tourism.
