Jane Swift

Jane Maria Swift ( born February 24, 1965 in North Adams, Berkshire County, Massachusetts) is an American politician ( Republican). From 2001 to 2003 she was the acting governor of Massachusetts.

Early years

Jane Swift attended to 1987 Trinity College, where she studied political science, among others. She decided for a political career and became a member of the Republican Party. In 1991 she was chosen as the youngest women in the Massachusetts Senate. There they sat particularly committed to a reform in education policy. In 1996, Jane Swift applied unsuccessfully for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1998 she was elected Vice- Governor of the State of Massachusetts. After Governor Paul Cellucci resigned from his post to become ambassador to Canada, Swift had to take over the office of his former deputy.

Governor of Massachusetts

Jane Swift exercised its new office between 10 April 2001 to 2 January 2003. At the time of taking office, she was one of the youngest people in the United States and the youngest woman ever had exercised this office. In addition, it is still the first and only woman in the office of the governor of Massachusetts. Their term of office was overshadowed by the consequences of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 and the related economic crisis. By spending cuts they managed to bring its budget without tax increases under control. She also campaigned for improvements in education. In 2002, she opted not to own candidacy for the office of governor. Her successor the Republican Mitt Romney was elected.

After her governorship drew Swift with her husband Chuck Hunt and her three children, two of which date born as twins during her governorship, in the western Massachusetts. There they run a horse breeding and horse riding school. Jane Swift continues to play an important role in their party. She holds guest lectures on various political issues and is an employee of a consulting firm. In 2008, she supported the unsuccessful presidential campaign of John McCain.
