Jean Duvieusart

Jean Pierre Duvieusart ( born April 10, 1900 in Frasnes- lez- Gosselies; † 11 October 1977 in Couillet ) was a Belgian Christian Democrat politician. From June to August 1950, he was Prime Minister of Belgium from 1964 to 1965 and President of the European Parliament.

Study and professional activity

Duvieusart attended the Collège des Pères Jésuites in Charleroi. He then completed a degree in law, political and social sciences at the Catholic University of Louvain and earned his Juris Doctor. He practiced as a lawyer in Charleroi.

Political career

Duvieusart began his political career as a member of the Parti Social Chrétien (PSC ), a predecessor of today's Centre Démocrate Humaniste ( CDH). From 1927 to 1947 he was mayor of his birthplace Frasnes. For the PSC, he was from 1933 to 1936 member of the Provincial Council, 1944 Member of the Chamber of Deputies and Senator from 1949 to 1965.

From March 20th 1947 to June 8, 1950, he was Minister of Economy and medium-sized businesses in the private offices of Paul -Henri Spaak and Gaston Eyskens.

In the premier issue is Duvieusart set for the return of Leopold III. to the Belgian throne a. In April 1950, he was commissioned to form a government by the Prince Regent Charles of Belgium. On 8 June 1950 he was appointed as the successor of Eyskens prime minister. However, from this position, he performed in just over two months, on 16 August 1950 after the abdication of King Leopold III. and the establishment of the later King Baudouin I returned as regent.

In the cabinet of Jean Van Houtte he was on 15 January 1952 to April 23, 1954, in turn, Minister of Economy and the Middle Class. In this role, he was also from 1952 to 1953 the first chairman of the Council of Ministers of the European Coal and Steel Community ( ECSC).

From 1958 to 1965 he was Member of the European Parliament. From March 20 1964 to September 23, 1965, he was President of the European Parliament. After the end of this term, he resigned from the PSC.

From 1968 to 1972 Duvieusart finally was Chairman of the Rassemblement Wallon and the Front Démocratique the Bruxellois Francophones ( FDF). In 1972 he retired finally back from active politics.

Duvieusart was married and had three sons and a daughter.
