The John Smith 's Stadium is a football stadium in Huddersfield, England. It is the sporting home of the football club Huddersfield Town, currently in the rugby league team Huddersfield Giants of the Football League Championship and from the Super League. On its four stands, it offers 24,500 covered seats. It replaced the Leeds Road Stadium by 1908.

History

In November 1991, Kirklees Metropolitan Council and the clubs Huddersfield Town Huddersfield Giants and decided to set up a consortium to build a new stadium complex with a wide range of sports and entertainment venues in Huddersfield. During the planning phase, the project was called Kirklees Stadium. In 1994 took place the inauguration of the Alfred McAlpine Stadium, after be erected Builders of the stadium instead. This agreement on the names ended in 2004 because the construction company the contract did not extend. New owner of the rights to names was on 31 July 2004 Galpharm International, the largest supplier of non-prescription medicines in the United Kingdom.

July 19, 2012 it was announced that the Heineken brewery has purchased the naming rights for the stadium. Since August 1, the home of the Terriers and the Giants is named John Smith 's Stadium after the Heineken belonging to John Smith 's Brewery. The contract has a term of five years.

Initially, only the two ranks were completed along the field, the third in the south grandstand was opened four months later. The construction of the fourth rank started in 1996 and was completed in 1997. The playing field has a soil heating. The away fans are housed in the John Smith's stand. The optics of the stadium is determined by the stands and the semi-circular arc-shaped roof assembly. Suspended on steel frame arches that lead to massive concrete pillars in the stadium corners and perched on them. From the roof supports in the corners of the masts of the floodlights stand out. The stadium was in 1995 awarded the RIBA Building of the Year Award.

The stadium 's record attendance was set up in the FA Cup match against Huddersfield Town FC Liverpool on 12 December 1999. For the game the 3rd round 23 678 spectators came to the Galpharm Stadium.

Other Terms

On 14 October 1999 a game of Rugby Union World Cup was held in the sports venue. There were successive teams of New Zealand and Italy. At the end, there was a clear 101:3 success for the New Zealanders. Furthermore, there were three qualifying matches to the Rugby Union World Cup in 1999.

The John Smith 's Stadium is also a venue for concerts. So, for example, were The Beautiful South, REM, Bon Jovi, Elton John, Bryan Adams, Blue or The Eagles on.
