The Portman Road (full name: Portman Road Stadium ) is a football stadium in Ipswich, England, where the local football club Ipswich Town play their home games. With a capacity of 30 311 seats, it is the largest stadium in East Anglia.

The stadium is also used for concerts, as occurred, for example, Elton John, REM or Red Hot Chili Peppers on there.

History

The construction of the Portman Road end of the 19th century, possessed Ipswich Town, at the time as Ipswich AFC, one of the first stages with goal nets and field markings. Due to the geographical location of the lawn had already at that time a high quality.

1936, the stadium was rebuilt and turned the playing field, so that was played from now on in a north-south direction. Railings were erected around the field and on the north and south end ever built a grandstand.

Over time, the stadium was expanded more and more, and during the FA Cup game against Ipswich Town Leeds United on 8 March 1975, the attendance record was set 38 010. Meanwhile, the capacity was 22 559, before again new grandstands were built in the 90s of last century, and the number of seats increased to 30 311.
