Jörg Widmann

Jörg Widmann ( born June 19, 1973 in Munich) is a German composer and clarinetist. He lives in Munich and Freiburg.

Education and Career

1980 Widmann received his first clarinet lessons. A year later, he was a composition student of Kay Westermann ( born 1958 ), later by Hans Werner Henze, Wilfried Hiller, Heiner Goebbels and Wolfgang Rihm. His clarinet He studied at the Academy of Music in Munich and at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. After the master class diploma in Munich in 1997, he has studied at the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe. Since 2001 he has been a professor of clarinet at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. In January 2008, Widmann has signed at the Institute for New Music, the Music Academy of Freiburg also a contract for half a professor of composition in the succession Mathias Spahlinger.

Musical work

Jörg Widmann is successful as a clarinetist and composer alike. As a soloist, he is a guest at major orchestras at home and abroad and has performed with conductors such as Christoph von Dohnányi, Sylvain Cambreling and Kent Nagano. Several clarinet concertos have been dedicated to him and premiered by him in 1999, he played in the " Musica Viva " the music for Clarinet and Orchestra ' by Wolfgang Rihm and 2006 with the WDR Symphony Orchestra, Cantus ' Aribert Reimann.
