Jürgen Thiele

Jürgen Thiele ( born August 8, 1959 in Altenburg ) is a former rower from the GDR. He won 1980 Olympic gold medal in coxless four.

With the quad without Thiele 1976 World Junior Champion and 1977 occupied the second place. 1978 and 1979 Thiele rowed in the second four of the SC DHfK Leipzig. A few weeks before the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Wolfgang skimmed injured his hand. Thiele moved as a substitute for the Olympic and World Champions Siegfried Brietzke, Andreas Decker and Stefan Semmler into the boat. When Rotsee Regatta turned the boat with Thiele on a new course record with 5:59,18 minutes. In Moscow at the Olympic regatta boat won in 6:08,17 minutes with a clear lead on the Soviet boat. He was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver for this success.

While his partner finished from the Olympic champion boat her career after the Games in Moscow, Thiele moved up to the national team. In 1981 he was at the World Championships in fourth with the DDR - eighth, 1983, he finished with the quad without the fourth.

Thiele is a trained electronics technicians. He had learned from the railroad and worked long on the Leipzig Central Station. Later he joined the TÜV.
