Kalevi Kiviniemi

Kalevi Kiviniemi (* June 30, 1958 in Jalasjärvi ) is a Finnish concert organist and composer. He is known for Finnish and French organ music, which he has played and recorded on historic organs, including the Notre- Dame de Paris. He is also a major improviser.

Life

Kalevi Kiviniemi 1981 put the exam as a cantor and organist and studied further for the concert diploma at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, literature match with Eero Väätäinen, improvisation with Olli Linjama. The international career of Kalevi Kiviniemi began in the early 1990s, with concerts in Japan and London. He has performed in Europe, USA, Asia, Australia and the Philippines.

Kiviniemi occurred several times in the Notre- Dame de Paris cathedral. His first concert in 2000, together with Olivier Latry ( titulaire des grands orgue ) was recorded for television. His first solo concert was in 2002.

In 2009, he played transcriptions for organ at the Konzerthaus Dortmund. In autumn 2010, he performed in the Laurenskerk in Rotterdam, the International Düsseldorf Organ Festival at the Rieger organ in St. Lambertus, at the Wuppertal Organ days at the Seifert organ of Beyenburger monastery church at the Mebold organ in St. Martin Idstein, and at the XII. International Organ Autumn in Straelen.

Kiviniemi was a member of the jury at internation alan organ competitions, as in 1996 Nuremberg International Organ Week, 1998 in Capri, 2001 in the cathedral at Speyer, 2005 at the International Organ Week in Korschenbroich. He held master classes, for example at the Ruhr- University Bochum. He was artistic director of the Lahti Organ Week in Finland from 1991 to 2001.

Recordings

Kiviniemis discography includes 2010, more than 140 titles, including recordings on historic organs in the United States, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, Italy, France, Switzerland and Germany, for example, the Cavaillé -Coll organ of St- Ouen de Rouen. Kiviniemi was the first who recorded the complete organ works of Jean Sibelius.

Under the Finnish label Fuga he began in 2001 a series of shots, OrganEra, are scheduled for 20 episodes.

Many of his recordings have won prizes. Improvisation was 1999 Star Recording of the magazine The Organ, Visions, Finnish organ music, received the Janne Prize for the best Finnish solo recording. His CD Lakeuden Ristin Urut was elected to the U.S. in 2009 for the best organ music.

Awards

Kalevi Kiviniemi received the Luonnotar Prize at the Sibelius Festival in Lahti and 2004 the price of Organum Society for his contribution to the Finnish organ music of 2003. In 2009 he was awarded the State Prize for music in Finland for his life's work.
