Kintampo South District

The Kintampo South District is one of 138 districts in Ghana. It is located in the center of Ghana in the Brong- Ahafo Region, where one of 19 regional districts. The Kintampo South District is bordered by the districts of Kintampo North, Pru, Tain, Wenchi, Techiman Municipal and Nkoranza in the Brong- Ahafo Region and Bole in the adjacent Northern Region. It also borders the neighboring state of Ivory Coast. Chief executive over the approximately 1775 km ² large district with about 93,600 inhabitants ( 2002), Yaw Adjei Duffour with the seat in the district capital Jema.

The district Kintampo South was formed with the district Kintampo North from the former Kintampo District by presidential decree by President John Agyekum Kufuor to August 2004.

Geography

The district is located in the Volta Basin at an altitude between 60 and 150 meters above sea level. A variety of large and small rivers and streams runs through the district, the largest rivers are pumpum, Oyoko, Nante and Tanti, all of which drain the black Volta.

Population

With an estimated population of 93,600 people in 2002, of which only 7,686 live in the district capital, Jema, the district has a relatively high population density. With an annual growth rate of 3 percent population growth exceeds the national average of 2.7 percent, slightly. As throughout the country significantly more women ( 47.736 ) in the district than men ( 45 864 ). In Kintampo South 0.4 percent of the national population living in Ghana.

The population lives in 122 villages, which consist usually of less than 100 people. Only the district capital Jema has an urban quality of life and has about 5000 inhabitants. The population is primarily to the ethnic groups of the Brong, Mo, Dagomba and Ashanti. Other minorities are represented. The population is mainly followers of a Christian religion, but also the Muslims constitute a growing population. Even traditional religions are practiced by a small part of the district population.

Economy

As in many parts of Ghana Kintampo South dominates in the agriculture, 72.7 percent of all employees work. A total of 60 percent of household income to be generated in the district in this segment of the economy. Mainly consists of subsistence agriculture, which produces little surplus.

Mainly yam, cassava, rice, peanuts, watermelon, cashew, mango and tobacco are degraded. But also vegetables such as eggplant and tomatoes are important crops. Even animal husbandry of cattle, sheep, goats, swine and poultry is an important source of food for the population. An estimated 80 percent of the companies working on a land area that is smaller than an acre.

Education

In the entire district are 5,428 housed in a nursery of 5,624 children aged 4 to 5 years, which corresponds to a rate of 96.5 percent. Of all children 7.4 percent are housed in a private facility. In pre-primary education 139 teachers are employed, so that calculation to a teacher 39 student accounts. Only 2.2 percent of pre-school teachers have completed a job-specific training.

Visited in the age group 6-11 years by the 15,284 children ( in 2000) of the district total 10,461 ( 68.2 percent) primary school. Of the 5,413 children aged 12 to 14 visited 38.1 percent the Junior Secondary School.

In the district a total of three higher education facilities are available with a Senior Secondary School, a higher commercial school and a vocational high school for technology. The Senior Secondary School in Jema has 546 students, of whom 37 percent are girls.

Health

In the district no hospital has been opened. Only a health center, two rural clinics and two private birth centers have so far been established. In the whole district not a doctor works; medical care has taken over support staff with a small number of a medical assistant.

Constituencies

In Kintampo South district, a constituency of the same name was established in the Yaw Effah - Baafi for the National Democratic Congress (NDC ) won the seat in the Ghanaian Parliament in the parliamentary elections of 2004.
