Tano South District

The Tano South District is one of 138 districts in Ghana. It is located in the center of Ghana in the Brong- Ahafo Region, where one of 19 regional districts. It is bordered by the districts of Tano North in the Brong- Ahafo Region. Tano South also borders the Ashanti Region with their districts Offinso, Ahafo Ano South and Ahafo Ano North. Chief Executive of the district with the capital Bechem and 61 693 inhabitants, Osei Sekyere Bota.

The Tano South District was formed only by Presidential Decree of 12 November 2003 in 2004 by division. The former district was divided into Tano Tano Tano North and South.

Geography

On the total area of 1,500 km ² of the district is covered on 322.52 km ² of dense forest. Here are two forest reserves have been established on the Bosomkese Forest Reserve and the Apaape reserve. A major problem in the District represent bushfires, as well as the slash and burn will continue to operate as traditional farming method in the District. Even with hunts fire are used as wild barriers, some of which get out of control.

The district rises 270-760 meters. However, from a few hills of the district lies at an altitude 270-360 meters above sea level. Important rivers are Bisi, Srani and Mankrang.

Population

Since the Tano South District of Ghana is one of the youngest, there are no adequate data from the now called the Tano South district part of the former district Tano. In 2006, estimates for the Tano South District showed a population of 61 693 people.

Only in Bechem with 12,591 inhabitants in 2006, Techimatia ( 12,261 in 2006 ) and derma ( 7236 /2006) can be described as urban settlements. Other larger towns are Dwomo ( 3108 /2006), New Brosankro ( 2019 /2006), Breme ( 1579 /2006), Mansin ( 1422 /2006) and Ankaase ( 1342 /2006).

Various traditional shrines are located in the District, such as Taa Dwomo in Dwomo, Daa in Derma and Ahwintakum in Bechem.

Economy

The economy in Tano South is significantly influenced by the agricultural sector, where 64 percent of all employees work. In the trade, 16 percent of people are employed in the service sector and 14 in the industry 6 percent. The trade and thus the number of employed economically active in this sector has risen sharply since larger market centers in Bechem, Techimantia and Derma been established. The expansion of the road network and the improvement of telecommunication deals have affected trade in the district positive.

In agriculture, 64 per cent of total employment. Of these, 52 percent of men and 48 percent women. Mainly maize, cassava, plantain, yam, tomatoes, okra and peppers are grown. But also exports such as coffee, cashew, cocoa and palm oil are produced.

Education

In the district there are 68 kindergartens, 90 primary schools and 43 junior secondary schools. Also, two Senior Secondary Schools and a technical vocational high schools are available. A total of 440 teachers are employed in all schools and educational institutions.

Between 2004, the year of the district, and in 2006 there was an increase in educational establishments of 8.6 percent. In particular, the number of kindergartens increased by 12.1 percent, the bodies of the junior secondary school rose by 10.9 percent.

Constituencies

In the district of North Tano an eponymous constituency has been established. Here Andrews Adjei - Yeboah won for the party New Patriotic Party (NPP ) in the 2004 parliamentary elections the seat in the Ghanaian parliament.
