Asutifi District

The Asutifi District is one of 138 districts in Ghana. It belongs to the located in the center of Ghana's Brong- Ahafo Region where it is one of 19 regional districts. The Asutifi District was formed in 1988 by decree of President Jerry Rawlings, together with the districts of Ahafo Ano North Ahafo Ano South and by the division of the Ahafo District.

Located in the southwestern part of the Brong- Ahafo Region Asutifi District bordered by the districts to the same region belonging Asunafo South, Asunafo North, Dormaa, Sunyani Municipal and Tano North and Ahafo Ano North to the districts and Atwima Mponua in the Ashanti region. Geography

The district is predominantly in a dense forest area at an average altitude of about 230 meters above sea level. The district is drained by the river Tano and its tributaries Nsubin, Goa and Ntrotro.

Major geographical surveys are the mountain ranges Birimain and Dahomeyan. In the Birimain mountain chain gold deposits were found. In addition, deposits of manganese and bauxite are suspected. Diamonds were found in the area around Wamahinso. Also sand deposits are found in Kenyasi, Gambia No.2, Hwidiem and Acherensua, Lehmlagerstätten were discovered in Nsunyameye and Dadiesoaba.

Population

In the census of the year 1984 54.891 inhabitants were counted. Back in 2000 this number had grown to 84 475. This results in an annual population growth rate of 2.8 percent. For 2006, estimates indicated a total population of 99 928 inhabitants.

From the total population count 54.3 percent to the closely related ethnic groups of the Ashanti and Brong the. Further 19.4 percent of the population are from the people of the North. Furthermore, Ewe and other Akan as the Fanti live in the district. Overall, 73.3 percent of the population are attributable to the Christianity, 23.8 percent are Muslims and 2.9 percent belong to traditional religions.

2006 Of the population accounted for approximately 54.7 percent of the population of working age between 15 and 64 years. Approx. 50.4 percent of the population are women. Only in the settlements Kenyani No. 2 and Hwediem lived in 2006 over 5000 people. Overall, about 20 percent of the population of the district lives under urban conditions. Economy

The population is mainly engaged in agriculture. 17 percent of the population earn their income from trading. Some banks are active in the district. Infrastructure

The water supply in the district is carried out in the areas Kenyasi, Acherensua and Hwidiem over tap water. All other settlements are not yet connected to the water system performance and meet the water demand for 57 per cent of the district population from hand-operated pumps, to 21 percent from boreholes. Almost 17 ​​percent have access to tap water.

Education and health

In District 86 kindergartens, 94 primary schools, 53 junior secondary schools and four Senior Secondary Schools have been opened so far. On average, three out of four children attend school and receive any rate of primary schooling.

The health sector in the district is with the Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Hwidiem of only one major health facility. Smaller health centers are the Kenyasi Health Centre, Gyedu health post, health post Acherensua, Dadiesoaba health post and the Gambia MCH Clinic. Other smaller village clinics in Gambia No.1 and Nkaseim. Three other birthing centers can be found in Kensere, Kenyasi and Twabidi. Approx. 60 obstetricians are also active in the district.

Constituencies

In the district Asutifi two constituencies were established. In the constituency Asutifi North Paul Okoh for the New Patriotic Party (NPP ) in the parliamentary elections in 2004 won the seat in the Ghanaian parliament. For the constituency, Alhaji Collins Dauda Asutifi South won the National Democratic Congress NDC parliamentary elections of 2004.
