Langley, British Columbia (city)

Langley is a town in Greater Vancouver in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Langley is located south of the Fraser River and north of the border to the USA. The city has an area of 10.22 km ² and 25,000 inhabitants (as of 2008). In the West Langley Surrey borders, in the north, east and south it is surrounded by the district Langley.

History

1827 in the lower reaches of the Fraser River through the Hudson's Bay Company trading post Fort Langley founded. He began as a fur trading post, and was changed after the exhaustion of Beaver and Seeotterpopulationen on the fishing of salmon and their preservation.

South of the area around present-day Langley was opened in the second half of the 19th century in connection with the Cariboo gold rush. Among the first settlers, the brothers William and Adam Innes, after which the settlement " Innes Corner " was named belonged. At the beginning of the 20th century, the area was especially developed by the link to the Canadian Pacific Railway on. In 1911 it received after the establishment of a post office named " Langley Prairie ". There came other smaller communities, now form the district Langley. Within the limits of the original settlement, which took a more urban development, the city Langley was founded with about 2000 inhabitants, on 15 March 1955.

Demography

The census in 2011 showed a population of 25 081 people for the city. The population has thereby increased since the census of 2006, only 6.2%, while the population in British Columbia grew by 7.0 % at the same time.

Policy

Langley forms since 1966, with its close proximity (94 km ², a total of about 54,000 inhabitants, as of 2001), an electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. Since 2004, it is the center of an electoral district (327 km ², 110,000 inhabitants, as of 2006) for elections to the Canadian House of Commons.

Culture and sights

In and around Langley, there are several museums, parks and other cultural and sports facilities. The Fort Langley National Historic Site in the historic trading post with about 65,000 visitors annually and the Canadian Museum of Flight are known.

In Langley find every year since 1997 the Auto Show Langley Good Times Cruise - In with over 100,000 visitors (2007) and since 1994 the artist Arts Alive Festival event with over 100 artists (2007) instead.

In Langley parts of the U.S. war drama The Hurt Locker were - The Hurt Locker ( 2008) rotated.
