Leonard Patrick Komon

Leonard Patrick Komon ( born January 10, 1988 in Korungotuny, Mount Elgon District, Western Province ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner.

From 2002 he attended the Cheptais Secondary School and entered successfully at various national school championships in track and in cross country. In 2005 he had to leave school because his family, the school fees could no longer afford, and working as an assistant on his father's farm. However, the marathon runner Steven Matebo Cheptot became aware of him, and under his guidance began his athletic career Komon continued.

The following year, he qualified fourth national championship for the junior race of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Fukuoka. There he won the silver medal and was taken then by the manager Gianni Demadonna under contract.

The following year he was at the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa fourth in the Junior category and won the team gold.

In 2008 he started in the adult race of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh and won the silver medal behind world champion Kenenisa Bekele and defending champions Zersenay Tadese. About the 10,000 meter distance he broke the 27 -minute mark, but had to retire injured in the national selection race for the Olympic Games in Beijing.

At the World Cross Country Championships 2009 in Amman, he finished fourth and won the team gold. The same individual and team placement, he reached the following year at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz.

When Singelloop Utrecht 2010 he won like last year, and this improved the world record in the 10 - km road race by 17 seconds, 26:44 min. Two weeks later he defeated at the Grand 10 Berlin the old world record holder Micah Kogo Kipkemboi and proceeded with the 27:12 on German soil min the fastest time.

In November he filed with Zevenheuvelenloop 41:13 min more than 15 kms to another world record in the road race.

In 2011 he won the Würzburg Residence running, the Healthy Kidney 10K, Dam tot Damloop, the Grand 10 Berlin, the Great South Run and the New Year's run Peuerbach.

Leonard Patrick Komon is 1,75 m tall and weighs 54 kg. He is employed by the Kenya Airports Authority as a firefighter and is trained by Juma Ndiwa. Since January 2008 he is looked after by manager Bob Verbeeck and his company Golazo.
