Lev Psakhis

Lew Psachis ( previously Russian Лев Борисович Псахис / Lev Borisovich Psachis, born November 11, 1958 in Kaliningrad ) is an Israeli chess master with roots in the Soviet Union.

Psachis In 1977 he won the championship of the RSFSR in 1979 and the tournament's young masters of the Soviet Union. His first participation in the USSR Championship 1979 ( 12th place ) followed a surprising split victory in 1980 with Alexander Beliavsky. A year later Psachis won again, shared with Garry Kasparov, whom he defeated in the direct encounter. In 1980 he became International champion and won in Naleczów ( Lublin Voivodeship ), 1981 he won in Sarajevo, 1982, he was Grand Master. In the same year he shared 2nd and 3rd place at the zone tournament in Yerevan and qualified for the interzonal tournament in Las Palmas, in which he shared space 8 to 10. Also in 1982 he finished third at the Dortmund Chess days behind Vlastimil Hort and Oleh Romanyschyn. 1990 emigrated Psachis to Israel, where he won the Israeli championship in 1997 and 1999. Between 1990 and 2002 he took part in seven Chess Olympiads for Israel.

Psachis acquired especially as a trainer and Sekundant a good reputation. He seconded the world class players like Garry Kasparov, Artur Yusupov, Zsuzsa Polgar, Judit Polgar and Emil Sutovsky. Since 2004, he has the title FIDE Senior Trainer. Psachis is considered as a serious theorist who published regularly ( as for ChessBase ). He wrote several books about the French defense. Psachis lives again mainly in Russia. In August 2011 he was in Tel Aviv by transplant a new liver.

His current Elo rating is 2538 (as of November 2009). According Chess Metrics in April 1982 he was ranked 7th in the world rankings with an ELO of 2718th
