Background

Mariah Carey's debut album was completed after she wrote with Ben Marguiles Love Takes Time. Marguiles said: "We quickly took on a demo recording. There was a piano - vocal recording - I played piano and sang Mariah Carey ".

On a mini-tour Carey presented the acoustic piano version with three background singers before. Later Mariah Carey Love Takes Time to Columbia Records presented President Don Jenner. "All the important person was involved, " recalls Marguiles. " Tommy Mottola, Jenner and Bobby Colomby. " Carey described the song as "a career maker ", it would necessarily have to appear on their debut album.

The demo recording was Mariah Carey, Walter Afanasieff, the producer. As Carey flew to California to work with Narada Michael Walden on other songs of their debut album, Tommy Mottola and Don Jenner were impressed by Afanasieffs work as a producer and gave him a job as a producer at Columbia Records.

" One day he 'll call ( Tommy ) me ," recalls Afanasieff. "He said, ' We need to finish the Mariah Carey album, but there is a song that she wrote with Ben Marguiles, the song is phenomenal and I will try everything to make the song appear on the album. I said, ' What shall I do for you then? ' and he said ' You've only got a few days time, but are you ready to produce the song? ' I could not believe that this was my chance to become a producer. I never had anything real produced up to that time. "

According Afanasieff the demo recording corresponded exactly to the ideas of Mottola. " We produced the music within a day. We had the song on this day produce, or it would no longer appeared on Carey's debut album. We took the recording and produced everything, then we flew by plane to New York City where we were recording vocals in a studio Carey. Carey all night has been preparing for her vocal recording. Her singing was recorded on multiple tracks, they also took over alone the backing vocals. "

When the album was released, Love Takes Time was not listed on some CDs and cassettes. " On some of the first copies of the album, there was too little time to the name of the song on the album imprinting " laughs Marguiles. "So the song is on the album, but the track list is not saying that the song on the album is. "
