Lyskovo, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast

Lyskowo (Russian Лысково ) is a town in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast (Russia) with 21 880 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 90 km southeast of Nizhny Novgorod Oblasthauptstadt at the mouth of the river in the Sundowik here to Tscheboksarsker reservoir dammed Volga.

Lyskowo is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

The settlement Lyskowo was first mentioned in documents in 1410.

By Lyskowo was the old road from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod to Kazan. Because of this favorable position compared to the administrative center of the former district ( Ujesds ) Makarjew on the other bank of the Volga was relocated during the course of the 19th century a large part of the authorities after Lyskowo whose meaning therefore grew, although Makarjew official county seat remained.

1925 Rajon Lyskowo was formed and given the place as its new official administrative center of the town right.

Culture and sights

In Lyskowo the Saviour's Transfiguration Church ( Спасо - Преображенский собор / Spaso- Preobrazhensky Sobor ) of 1711 and the Church of the Resurrection ( Вознесенская церковь / Wosnessenskaja Tserkov ) obtained from 1838.

In the nearby village Kirikowo the Immaculate Transfiguration Church is ( Успенская церковь / Uspenskaja Tserkov ) of 1692nd On the hill Olenja Gora ( Hirschberg ) on the bank of the Volga remains of a fortress from the 14th to 16th centuries have been preserved.

On the opposite bank of the Volga, the urban-type settlement Makarjewo lies with the significant, founded in 1435 Makarios - Scholtowodski - Trinity monastery.

The city has a museum of local history.

Economy and infrastructure

In Lyskowo there are plants of the device and equipment as well as the textile and food industries.

The city is situated on the M7 highway Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod -Kazan - Ufa (part of European route 22).
