The R504 is a Kolyma highway of federal importance in the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia) and Magadan Oblast in Russia. It runs from Nizhny Bestjach at Yakutsk in an easterly direction through the Verkhoyansk Mountains to Magadan on the Pacific coast. The street is named after the river Kolyma, she will cruise at Debin. It was formerly known as Road of Bones or road of death, because when it was built, many of the Gulag prisoners employed were killed.

History

In connection with the development of mining in Yakutia in the 1920s began with the construction of a regional road network. In November 1931, the government construction company Dalstroy was established, whose task it was to build a road from Magadan to Ust- Nera with a branch to Yakutsk. The labor of the Soviet prison camp inmates were used in the region. In the summer of 1932, the first 120 km were released. The remaining approximately 1,000 miles to Ust- Nera were completed by 1953. In late 1941, work began on the Chandyga - route to Yakutsk, where there is only ferry on the Lena between Nizhny Bestjach and Yakutsk today.

In the 1990s, the road was formally upgraded to "Main " and the M56 by Newer in the Amur Oblast Nizhny Bestjach (now the A360 ) connected. At first she was passable for long stretches with only off-road vehicles or in the winter because it was attached only to parts and pieces were missing most bridges over the larger rivers. 2010 received the R504 road again its own number.

Since 2011, the new road between km 730 ( Kjubjume ) Mileage 1087 km ( Kadyktschan ) was completed. The route is slightly different than the old route, but the condition of the road is very good. Also other sections of the R504 will continue to work.
