S-Class (1998-2002)
The Mercedes -Benz 220 series ( S-Class ) replaced the 140 series and was offered from 1998 to 2005. The S-Class was built as a saloon in two wheelbases. The corresponding coupe, the CL -Class ( C 215 ). The S-Class was in many countries a long time leader in the luxury class segment, but was superseded by the BMW 7 Series in their last year of production 2004. Since 1998, the series was produced 220 485,000 times. The S 320 CDI was about the best-selling model. Successor model is the Series 221
Model history
General
After the precursor - the 140 series - has been criticized for its size and weight, it decreased in the 220 series, the dimensions and made successful efforts to reduce weight and air resistance. The weight was, for example, the new S 320 compared with the same predecessors (both with 3.2 liter big six-cylinder engine ) decreased from 1910 to 1695 kg (total weight ready to ride without a driver ). The drag coefficient was 0.31 to 0.27 and the air resistance index ( drag coefficient x frontal area) reduced from 0.745 to 0.624 m2. This resulted in improved performance and fuel economy. Using the example of S 320, the maximum speed increased from 225 to 240 km / h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h decreased from 9.3 to 8.2 s, and the consumption (New European Driving Cycle, NEDC combined ) of 13, 4 to 11.5 l/100 km.
The 220 series is equipped with the exception of the S 600 L and the AMG versions with air suspension. The S 600 L and the AMG variants, however, have the Active Body Control suspension. For the other models, it was available at extra cost. The 220 series is thus on the related-art Mercedes -Benz C 215 the first car from German production that was available with an active control of the suspension and damping.
Models
The 220 series was available in several engine variants, most of them with short and long wheelbase. Only the twelve-cylinder models were only available as a long-wheelbase version. The 5.0-liter V8 engine M 113 of the model S 500 and the V12 M 137 in the S 600 L were available with cylinder deactivation ( ZAS ). When cylinder shut-off under partial load four or six cylinders are shut down by valve shut-off. This results in better efficiency and lower fuel consumption due to lower throttling losses and greater cylinder filling. The consumption of the S 500 decreases by 0.9 l/100 km. With the facelift 2002, the S 600 L received a completely new V12 engine with bi- turbocharging, for no cylinder deactivation was available. Also for the S 500 accounted for this option.
In addition to the eight and twelve- cylinder six-cylinder also been used in the 220 series. By 2002, the base model in Europe was the S 320 and S 280 in Asia 2002, the S 320 has been replaced by the enlarged engine capacity 3.7-liter V6 from the ML and offered as S 350. Consistently offered, albeit with a slight increase in performance in 2002 was also the S 320 CDI. As a diesel model of the S was 400 CDI with 4.0 -liter V8 in the offer, which received a significant increase in performance in 2003.
As of 1999, AMG variants were offered, which differ in addition to more powerful engines also through body changes from the base models. It started with the S 55 AMG, the V12 is about the same performance, but is designed to be much more sporty. Was offered in a small series of the S 63 AMG L Only in 2002, but soon the the now 368 kW ( 500 hp) replaced strengthened supercharged V8 in the S 55 AMG. When most powerful engine was offered in the last two years of production, the S 65 AMG L V12 biturbo engine and 450 kW ( 612 hp).
The respective 4MATIC versions were only built from 2002 to 2005.
Facelift in 2002
The following changes were implemented in the framework of the facelift in October 2002:
- New front bumper and larger grille
- Clear glass headlights, turn signals in the exterior mirrors in clear glass and tail lights with four white stripes
- New alloy wheels
- Refined materials in the interior as well as new, high-quality center console design with an enlarged monitor ( 16.5 cm diagonal)
- Modified front seats, optional as driving dynamic multi-contour seats (standard on AMG models )
- Emergency Brake Pre-Safe standard
- Rollover sensor ( to trigger the curtain airbags with a rollover ) and modified ignition the passenger airbag
- Improved, fully automated Active Body Control suspension tuning
- Optional permanent all-wheel drive system 4MATIC for S 350, S 430 and S 500
- New or modified engines replace the previous units, except for S 430 and S 500
2003
- In the S 430 and S 500 are replaced by the seven-speed automatic five-speed.
