Mercedes-Benz W210

Mercedes -Benz E-Class Sedan (1995-1999)

The E-Class of the 210 series is a car model of the upper middle class of Mercedes -Benz. It was introduced as the successor to the 124 series in May 1995.

The E-Class, there was initially a classic sedan with a notchback. Unlike its predecessor, this series has a distinctive shape with elliptical headlight glasses, which became known as the " four- eyes face." In addition to technical improvements, more customization options were realized. The series was supplemented by a Kombi ( station wagon ) in June 1996.

In March 2002, the 210 series was replaced by the 211 series; the Model T got its successor in December of the same year. During this period, ran 1,653,437 units of the assembly lines in Sindelfingen, Rastatt and Graz.

Generally

With the introduction in the spring of 1995, the new E-Class takes the heritage of the successful 124 series. In contrast to the more conservative design of its predecessor, Mercedes -Benz gave this model a new design language. Four elliptical headlamps of the vehicle front and softer lines provide a dynamic appearance. The vehicle design was awarded the red dot design award. The shape of the body is not only distinctive, it also has a low aerodynamic drag (Cd = 0.27). Paints were related to water-based paint.

The crash safety has been further improved. Additional cost side airbags were installed to support the side impact protection and force limiters.

A number of systems were first offered at Mercedes -Benz E-Class for an additional charge. So found on the options list, a rain sensor, electronic climate control with air quality sensor and parking aid Parktronic. The standard equipment of the E-Class has significantly enhanced. In the 210 series include the electronic traction system ETS, electric windows front and rear, outside temperature display, and a third brake light on the parcel shelf to the series scopes.

At launch, there was essentially known engines from the previous model and the C-Class or further developments. Only the model E 290 Turbo Diesel with its OM 602 DE 29 LA engine with direct injection, a fundamental innovation. Is not offered in Germany, first the E 200 Kompressor. This offshoot of the motor series M 111 is charged by a compressor and was sold in countries with high engine capacity taxation. On most models, the five-speed manual transmission was standard. For an additional charge, or in the larger petrol engines as standard four-or five-speed automatic transmission were installed.

In the E-Class the already known from the C-Class concept of design and equipment lines was adopted. These differ in features and appearance. The base model is the line "Classic", while " Elegance" and had to be ordered at extra cost " avant-garde".

The multi-link rear axle of the predecessor had proved successful and was used further, the front axle was fitted, however, instead of simpler damper struts with more elaborate double-wishbone suspension. In this design, the shock absorbers must not cause the wheels and transmit bending moments, resulting in a higher ride comfort. The construction with double wishbones further reduces the pitching moment, eg when braking. However, the recirculating ball steering had to give way to a rack and pinion steering, which provides a more direct steering feel. She is supported by the standard power steering, which was available with speed-sensitive steering assistance surcharge as a so-called " sensitive steering ".

The interior was designed more massive and rounded. It also came a separately controllable heating for driver and front passenger to use. This was fitted as standard with a dust filter and air recirculation function. As before, there was real wood trim in the interior, in which the recesses were milled individually for the switch, depending on the scope of equipment. Thus, there are no blind switch, index the missing equipment. The electronic instrument cluster has an illumination in transmitted light technique and mileage displays are now digital. Lamp failures are indicated by a warning light. A special feature is the pneumatic system, which drives the headlight range control, central locking and optional fold-down rear headrests.

Karosserievarianten

Saloon (W 210)

In May 1995, the first sedan was launched as the first member of the new E - Class generation on the market and internally designated W 210. Depending on the size of the fuel tank, luggage compartment capacity is 500 liters ( 65 liter tank ) or 520 l ( 80 liter tank ). In order to facilitate the transport of long objects, a load-through hatch with ski bag was installed at an additional cost. This made a tunnel located behind the rear seat fuel tank necessary. The tank volume is thus 70 l of vehicles with this special equipment. The sedan was offered as a special protection vehicle. Throughout the construction period, the models E 420 and E 430 could be ordered with the high protection B6. That means high vehicle weight made the eight-cylinder engine required. As of March 1997, the E-Class was also sold with the protection level B4. The lighter protection concept provides security against the most common handguns calibers. Due to the lower weight of the B4- protective package was also available for the Model E 320. The special feature of the armoring is the full integration of the protective elements in the body structure of the vehicle, as this could already be inserted during the manufacturing process. With a wheelbase of 2833 mm, the limousines are 4818 mm long, 1799 mm wide and 1450 mm high.

From the limo 1,374,199 copies were produced.

T-Modell (S 210)

The offered from June 1996 Model T carries the internal designation S 210, the load capacity here is 600 liters up to the amount of the load compartment cover when folded up rear seat. When folding the seat, upgraded seat pad and loading up to the roof, a maximum load volume of 1975 liters can be achieved. The asymmetrically split folding bench seat is standard in the T- model. The combos are 4850 mm long, 1799 mm wide and 1496 mm high.

From the Model T ran until December 2002 279.238 copies from the tape, making it contributed only a small proportion of the production figures of the 210 series. For this body variant were not available all engines.

Chassis (VF 210)

Coinciding with the Model T chassis, a variant was also reintroduced. The main customers of VF 210 were undertakers and suffers transportation organizations. Unlike the 124 series, there was no version with standard wheelbase. It was only offered the extended version with larger by 74 cm wheelbase. At launch, it was the type E 290 Turbo Diesel, later the follow types E 250 Diesel ( for the Italian market ), E 280 and E 220 CDI. The partially bodied chassis were no longer built entirely in Mercedes- Benz plants. The company Binz in Lorch moved from Sindelfingen car bodies of the T- model, and then modify it accordingly and provided with drive, chassis, electrics and interior design. The chassis were supplied for the further development either bodybuilder or extended directly to the ambulance at the company Binz.

Long Saloon ( 210 V )

On request of the Thai royal house created in 1996 an extended sedan based on the Series 210 In cooperation with the company Binz, this body variant was jointly developed and first produced a single piece. The 320 has an extended wheelbase by 97 cm, six doors and a full third-row seats. Due to popular demand, the long-wheelbase version of the E-Class has been produced from end of 1996 by Binz in series. Customers could choose between all five-and six-cylinder models with petrol or diesel engine. In addition to the above version with six doors and three rows of seats in the direction of travel and a four-door variant was constructed with two opposing rows of seats in the rear.

Model history

Urversion

E 200, E 230 and E 320 parallel, the diesel variants were offered E 220 Diesel and E 300 Diesel: For the launch of the E-Class on 15 May 1995 following models were available with a petrol engine. Exclusive for export, there were the models E 200 and E 250 diesel compressor from launch. Shortly thereafter, the model range was expanded. Starting in September, the offer with the variant E 280, E 420 and E 290 Turbodiesel was extended. As a particularly powerful model of the E 50 AMG has been introduced. In addition to the powerful engine and a special chassis, this vehicle is bordered by an AMG Ausstattungspaktet visually from the rest of the series.

From the year 1996, the Model T to the motors E 200 T, E 230 T, E 420 T, E 290 Turbo Diesel T was available. Again, there were export models E 200 Kompressor T and E 250 Diesel T. Moreover, it was offered as E 200 Diesel for the Portuguese market the sedan. Also available from this time, the taxi version of the E 220 Diesel. The engine of this type is derated, and suitable for operation with biodiesel. This year also saw the production of the trucks ran on.

Small facelift

In March 1997, the series has undergone a small facelift 210. The infrared remote control of the locking system was replaced by a radio version with beardless key and the electronic drive authorization system ELCODE. As standard brake assist and traction control have now been installed. The side airbags in the front doors were now comes as standard an automatic locking of the doors from a speed of 8 km / h The new ASSYST service computer allows flexible maintenance intervals that are based on the operating conditions of the vehicle. At the same time the six-cylinder in the M104 series in E 280 and E 320 were replaced. The new engine generation M112 has a 90 ° V arrangement, light metal structures and three-valve technology. The new engines were also available with all-wheel drive system 4MATIC. Also new is the E 300 Turbodiesel, but which relies on proven technology, such as indirect injection.

At the IAA in September 1997, followed by other engines. The six-cylinder E 240 replaces the E 230 with four cylinders. The latter, however, was made until 1998, some foreign markets and for CKD kits. The models E 420 and E 50 AMG have been replaced by types E 430 and E 55 AMG. Their engines of the M113 series are technically related closely with the six-cylinder engines and were manufactured on the same production lines. For export markets, there was also some innovations. The E 200 Kompressor was increased in performance and the E 250 Diesel supplemented by the E 250 Turbodiesel.

A completely new generation of diesel engines received in June 1998 in the E-Class collection. The engines from the OM 611 series have a common-rail fuel injection, low fuel consumption provides significantly more maximum power in combination with the turbocharger. In particular, the high torque of the motors makes them popular. The E 200 CDI and E 220 CDI replaced the E 200 Diesel and E 220 diesel. The latter was further built in the cab variant.

A big upgrade

Profound changes in appearance and technique learned the 210 series with the great facelift in August 1999. More than 1800 components have been replaced or modified in the course of this measure. The vehicle's front was lowered conspicuous. Painted side skirts and door handles, rounded exterior mirrors with integrated turn indicators, new tail lamps and a redesigned rear bumper contributed to a more modern appearance. In addition, the roof rails of the Model T were reshaped and redesigned wheels or wheel covers introduced.

The interior has also been redesigned: New materials have found their way and the shape of the door trim was redesigned. The handles on the headliner were now hinged instead of rigid. A multifunction steering wheel with 8 buttons enabled the operation of telephone, radio and the trip computer. The instrument cluster has been displayed on a display of information on these systems. In addition, have been included in the standard equipment from this time ESP and window from the options list. New optional extras there were in the form of ventilated front seats, a dynamic navigation system and the new COMAND infotainment system with a large screen.

All engines up to 2.8 liter displacement received a new gearbox with six gears. For a surcharge, for the larger engines as standard a new five -speed automatic transmission with electronic touch shift was delivered. The eight-cylinder engines could now be ordered with all-wheel drive.

The range of diesel engines has been changed. With the facelift, the types have been revised E 200 CDI and E 220 CDI and increased in power and replaced the five-cylinder E 290 Turbo Diesel. The six-cylinder E 300 turbodiesel is replaced by the five-cylinder E 270 CDI from the OM 612 series and the six-cylinder E 320 CDI (OM 613). All CDI engines were technically closely related. They differ mainly by the number of cylinders.

The range of petrol engines initially remained unchanged. In mid-2000 the E 200 and the export versions of the E 200 Kompressor was replaced by the based on the series M 111 EVO E 200 Kompressor. The E 240 experienced an engine capacity increase of 2.4 to 2.6 liters.

In the AMG styling package the bumpers and side skirts were also offered for the other engines. Also available were the 18 "alloy wheels.

E 50 AMG

The 210 series was offered in February 1996, as the E 50 AMG. For the first time in the E-Class has been included in the regular price list with this variant, an AMG vehicle. In the price list dated 5 February 1996, the E 50 AMG was with a basic price of DM 148 350, - listed.

E 60 AMG and E 36 AMG

Also used already in the previous six-liter V8 was offered again as E 60 AMG, but only on special request when AMG. This was then constructed on the basis of the E 50 AMG with AMG. Similarly, the E 36 AMG was 280 (analogous to the C-Class) available based on the E. Of the two versions, there were only small numbers. From the E 60 AMG, there were also single pieces, which were built with an enlarged 6.3 liter displacement engine.

E 55 AMG

The previous models were replaced by the new E 55 AMG As of August 1999, which was powered by the new V8 - type M 113. Officially, the E 55 AMG was offered only as a sedan. In the price list dated 29 January 2001, a purchase price of DM 152,233.98 is specified. AMG provided on request even vehicles with all-wheel drive 4MATIC ago. Base vehicle for this purpose were each E 430 4MATIC.

Tuning models

Throughout the construction period, there were numerous tuning vehicles Nobel tuners like Brabus, Lorinser and Carlsson. These differed in appearance and engine performance of the standard models. In particular, the Brabus E V12 also boasts a 7.3 liter twelve-cylinder engine represents a radical reconstruction

Drive

For the 210 series, there was a wide range of vehicles with petrol and diesel engines. Kamen at start of production yet known engine types used, these were gradually replaced by more modern types from other series. In the later course of production of the all-wheel drive 4MATIC was added.

Gasoline engines

Four cylinder

M 111 The four-cylinder petrol engines in the E-Class are all from the M 111 series and have already been used in the previous series. The E 200 and E 230 have a light-alloy cylinder head and a cast iron engine block. Four valves per cylinder are controlled by two overhead, from a timing chain driven camshafts. For use in the 210 series, the injection system of the engine was equipped with a hot-film air mass measurement. Both engines also got an adjustable intake camshaft during operation. With the smaller engine, the shape of the combustion chamber was changed and increased in the case of the larger engine displacement. In 1997, the E 230 through the small six-cylinder E 240 has been replaced. The production of the larger four cylinder but was maintained for some export markets and use in CKD kits for another year.

For export markets with displacement -based taxation of E was made 200 compressor. It is based on the presented at the IAA 1995 engine of the C 230 Kompressor and how this a Roots blower type Eaton M62. In the first model year of this engine was (180 hp) with an output of 132 kW. Later there were two power levels of 141 kW ( 192 PS; for Italy, Greece and Portugal) and 137 kW ( 186 hp or for any other export markets ), which were maintained until mid-2000. M 111 EVO From this point on all four -cylinder models were replaced by the E 200 Kompressor with the new engine M 111 EVO. Compared to its predecessor than 150 components have been changed. In particular, the new Eaton M45 compressor is improved in charging noise, friction and weight. Further modifications reduce the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions of the engine.

Six cylinder

M 104 In the first two years of production, the models E 280 and E 320 were offered with the M 104 engine. This six-cylinder in how the four-cylinder E-Class a cast iron engine block and alloy cylinder head. Similarly, it has four valves per cylinder, which are controlled by two camshafts driven via a timing chain. He has a two-stage phase adjustment of the intake camshaft. AMG made on special customer the E 36 AMG, which is based, as in the C-Class on the E 280. This he took over the basic features of the M 104 engine of the E 280, but has been thoroughly revised and increased performance. M 112 In 1997, these models were given the new M 112 engine. The 90 ° V-type engine having two intake valves and one exhaust valve per cylinder. Block and cylinder heads are made of aluminum. A camshaft per cylinder bank controls the valves via rocker arms. The three-valve design with a single exhaust valve results in a smaller surface area of the exhaust port, whereby, in a cold engine, the exhaust gas heat to the lower cylinder head loses. Thus, the catalysts achieve an optimal operating temperature faster. Each cylinder has two spark plugs, which fire at different times and thus allow rapid and uniform combustion. Through these measures, the fuel consumption with better power output could be reduced by up to 13% compared to the previous R6 engines. The then most stringent emissions standards could be undercut. The E 240 was offered as the smallest variant of the new engine type. In 2000, the displacement of this type has been increased from 2.4 liters to 2.6 liters, while the name remained the same.

Eight-cylinder

M 119 The M - 119 engine used AMG and its stages of development in the E 420 and the E 50 has been used in the previous 124 series and has four-valve cylinder heads with two chain-driven overhead camshafts per cylinder bank. Again came a two-stage phase adjustment of the intake camshaft used. All AMG vehicles with the engine M 119 were built based on the E 420. M 113 The type M 113 is technically related closely with the six-cylinder M 112. Both engines have the same angle of 90 ° between the cylinder banks, same cylinder spacing of 106 mm and were able to be manufactured on the same production lines. Its debut this series in September 1997 as E 430, which replaces the E420. The previous AMG engines are fitted with a successor to the E 55 AMG.

Diesel engines

Four cylinder

OM 604 With the series OM 604 established Mercedes -Benz C-Class already in the four-valve technology for diesel engines. The use of four rather than two valves per cylinder enabled increased torque and power over a substantially larger engine speed range. At the same time fuel consumption at full load dropped by up to eight percent. The OM 604 was initially offered only in the E 220 Diesel. He was also available as a performance reduced and optimized for biodiesel taxi model. For export to Portugal, however, the one developed E 200 Diesel, which was from June 1996 to July 1998 only built 688 times. OM 611 In June 1998, the new models E 200 CDI and E 220 CDI appeared. Under the hood, the OM 611, the first Mercedes - Benz diesel engine with common -rail direct injection works. In this case, the injection pressure (up to 1350 bar ) is a constant stored in a common rail for all cylinders. Solenoid valves allow the fuel then inject via the injectors. The comparison with the E 220 diesel yields 30 percent more power and 50 percent more torque at 10 percent less fuel consumption. The torque increase is particularly noticeable in the lower speed ranges. The new model replaces the E 200 Diesel and 220 Diesel, which is available only as a reduced-power taxi variant.

With the facelift in August 1999 accounted for this variant and the engines E 200 CDI and E 220 CDI received a revision, which increased their power and brought many detail improvements.

Five cylinder

OM 602 An exceptional position in the diesel engine program takes the E a 290 turbo diesel. Based on the type of engine OM 602 he was installed from March 1996 until the big facelift and features turbocharging and intercooling. He was the first Mercedes passenger car diesel with direct injection, but even without common-rail system (CDI ) and four-valve technology. Despite pilot injection and very restrained performance design of the engine had the typical loud sound image of a direct injection of the first generation. To reduce the noise level significantly more extensive insulation than was previously necessary. OM 605 Diesel engines from the OM 605 series were offered in the E-Class only in Greece, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia and Hungary. From launch to a big facelift of type E was built 250 Diesel. He is technically related closely with the four-cylinder E 200 Diesel and differs from it mainly by a further cylinder, while Bore, stroke and four-valve technology match. In September 1997, the E added 250 turbo diesel engine offering for the foreign markets. He is technically based on the E 250 Diesel. The built turbocharger increases the power of the OM 605 of 83 kW ( 113 hp ) to 110 kW ( 150 hp). OM 612 All five-cylinder diesel engines were replaced 270 CDI at the big facelift by the e. Similar to the previous series to be OM 612 CDI engine is based on the four-cylinder OM 611 Again, the main difference is the E 220 CDI in the number of cylinders.

Six cylinder

OM 606 From the start of production until March 1997, the E 300 Diesel was the largest displacement diesel model in the E-Class. As representatives of the OM 606 series it is a extended by one or two cylinder derivative of the models E 200 Diesel and E 250 diesel. His four-valve naturally aspirated diesel engine with indirect injection is technically related closely with these types. After setting the E 300 diesel in the E 300 Turbodiesel marked the top model in the diesel engine offering of the Series 210 As with the fünfzylindrigen brother caused the turbocharger here for a significant increase in performance of 100 kW ( 136 hp ) to 130 kW (177 hp). OM 613 The E 320 CDI replaced the OM 606 engines for the large model care. Its OM 613 engine with 145 kW ( 197 hp ) peak power is very similar to the other CDI engines from a technical perspective and with them forms an engine family.

All-wheel drive

As on the previous model in the E-Class from 1997, the all-wheel drive system 4MATIC was available as an option. Compared to the previous system in the drive concept was further developed fundamentally. The permanent all-wheel drive combined with the electronic traction system ETS. The conventional differential locks the predecessor accounted for it. Be developed and built the new 4MATIC models in collaboration with Steyr -Daimler- Puch in Graz GmbH. First, the all-wheel drive in the E 280 4MATIC was available, later the offer on the E 320 4MATIC types and E 430 4MATIC was extended. AMG made based on the E 430 4MATIC, a small series of the E 55 AMG 4MATIC. The all-wheel drive was offered for sedan and wagon alike.

Weaknesses

In general, the vehicles of the 210 series are considered to be very robust and technically unremarkable. Nevertheless, have revealed a number of weaknesses over the years. In particular, massive corrosion damage to the body have damaged the reputation of this E-Class.

Drive

Motors

  • For gasoline engines, there are often these problems: uneven running (air mass sensor ), engine dying at idle ( idle speed control ), lack of passage ( crankshaft sensor ).
  • In the first models with CDI engines, problems occurred repeatedly. The cylinder heads were hairline cracks, which was not detected by diagnostic systems and only occasionally was noticeable by pressure build-up in the cooling system. Only in advanced mileage ( 200,000 km ), the problem was obvious and then required the replacement of the cylinder head.
  • The seals of the Lucas distributor injection pump E 220 diesel (70 kW) become leaky with age often hard and in a row. Replacement of the entire injection pump is very expensive, a change of the affected seals is possible.
  • The control chain of the M 119 engine E 420 and E 50 AMG is regarded as vulnerable and can especially at high mileages for problems ensure - through to chain plan.

Transmission

  • The automatic transmission ( ATG) are in need of maintenance, if a long lifetime is desired. One reported scarf Trucken and shifting problems, but they are often disposed of by gear oil change. The manufacturer shall, therefore, despite a previously publicized life filling of automatic transmission ( no change of ATF required) changed back to a one-time change the transmission oil after 60,000 km. In recent times, is also a rinse and subsequent refilling offered on the market by some service companies for the care of the ATG. This eliminates the previous problem that when pure draining and refilling of the transmission oil (ATF ) is model dependent not replaced the entire amount of oil.
  • The central plug of the ATG leaks on a seal, it then draws ATF through the cable to the control unit of the automatic transmission, which needs to be replaced then.

Fahrzeugelektrik

  • In the first cars (except Xenon) there are problems with often by burning bulbs.
  • The six-cylinder is reflected in high-mileage usually from 170,000 km of the cylinder head cover gaskets oil loss. The leaking oil dripping on the exhaust, an unpleasant odor is the result.
  • The ABS and ESP warning light was often criticized, the alternator was replaced, but this usually before the warranty period expires.
  • The brake light switch suffers in many vehicles a defect and then triggers a warning message " BAS / ASR", or the indicator lights "ABS" and "ESP " from.
  • From model year 2000 occur with increasing vehicle age increases so-called pixel errors in the instrument cluster ( clock, outside temperature display), which complicate the reading greatly or make partially impossible, because often skipping several segments of the digital displays. An error that can be resolved by a costly replacement of the entire instrument cluster intermittently since Mercedes repair shops to make repairs thereto. However, there are various companies on the Internet that make these repairs cheap and durable. It can be found on the Internet some instructions on how you can make a reasonably technically gifted self repair.

Body

  • In all years are more common rust problems. Often young vehicles were affected, but there are exceptional vehicles from certain small time windows of the production, which are not affected. An often alleged, causal relationship to the use and housing conditions of the vehicle (salt- rich area; poorly ventilated room, etc.) has not been established beyond normal, any other vehicle in question increased risk existing in this series scientifically.

Criticism

In all years appear rust problems. The problem has been acknowledged since about 2000 by the automotive press and affects all models. The manufacturer granted for vehicles, depending on their overall condition and already conducted earlier goodwill work, fair dealing in the removal of rust damage, however, this only until the 8th (on some components up to 10 ) Running year and starting only after massive pressure from the media since 2001. vehicle owners who had scheckheftgepflegt their vehicles, were on a goodwill partially or completely free rust removal.

A long-term solution to the problem of it not surrendered. An attempt, the 30-year " against rusting ( from inside to outside ) " sue for 1998 vehicles sold on or after 24 October, was by the Federal Court on 12 December 2007, not executed on the grounds of authorized workshops inspections, dismissed (case VIII ZR 187/ 06). The Higher Regional Court of Stuttgart has also performed in a judgment of 14 October 2008, " rusting from the inside out " under this warranty products does not (case 1 U 74/ 08).

When Thüringer Oberlandesgericht other hand, was an action for liability for rust defect of a Mercedes -Benz Vito, successfully under the 30-year MobiloLife warranty for cars from 2000, on 23 May 2011: " The guarantee claims will not fail due to the lack of perception of maintenance in authorized workshops of the defendant. " " The expert defines the term" rusted from the inside out "as such corrosion processes, begins where no mechanical damage to the coating ( corrosion protection) to rust in the sheet ". The appeal was denied (Reference 9 U 100 /10).
