National Routes of Uruguay
This list provides an overview of the Rutas Nacionales del Uruguay, the Uruguayan highways.
They are the most important transport routes of the country and connecting the main towns and villages. This road network of a total of 8698 kilometers, has 303 km concrete, asphalt 3164 km, 4220 km and 1009 km bitumen- treated natural road surface.
Numbering and naming of the individual roads
The Rutas Nacionales in Uruguay have names of people from the history of the country, often military commander. The Ruta Interbalnearia is not numbered.
Classification of roads
The Uruguayan Ministry of Transport ( Ministerio de Transporte y Obras Públicas ) makes the following classifications for the streets of the country:
- Corredor Internacional
- Red Primaria
- Red Secundaria
- Red Terciaria
- And those in which the classification of the material of the road surface is dependent.
Corredor Internacional
Roads connecting Montevideo with the border crossings in the country. The road surface is made of either concrete or asphalt.

- Ruta 8, only from Montevideo to Treinta y Tres
- Ruta 9, complete
Red Primaria
Departamento capitals connecting roads. The road surface is made of asphalt or bitumen is treated.

- Ruta 7, section from Montevideo ( approximately 100 km)
- Ruta 8, Treinta y Tres to Aceguá
- Ruta 21, complete

Red Secundaria and Red Terciaria
Roads connecting small villages, various beach resorts or important agro-industrial zones together. The road surface is bitumen- treated or natural.
