Neustadt am Main ( officially: Neustadt a.Main ) is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Main -Spessart and a member of the administrative community Lohr am Main.

Geographical Location

Neustadt am Main is located in the Würzburg region. In Neustadt is the highest mountain of the district Main-Spessart, the monastery dome with 552 m. There arises the silver hole creek that flows through Neustadt am Main.

Name

Etymology

The town's original name Rorenlacha consists of the Old High German words řorīn and lahha. It means " an overgrown with cane swamp ". This name root is also found in the name of Erlach. A newly built settlement, in close proximity to Rorenlacha, got the name with the meaning " new home ". It consists of the Old High German words niuwe and stat. The same root name inserted in the nearby town Neuendorf. The addition Neustadt am Main differs from other varieties of the same name.

History

The Benedictine monastery Neustadt am Main was founded before the year 769. It was dissolved in 1803 in the wake of secularization.

As part of the Office Rothfels of the Bishopric of Würzburg the place fell in Reichsdeputationshauptschluss in 1803 at the Prince Löwenstein -Wertheim -Rosenberg. After the mediatization 1806 by the Principality of Aschaffenburg found it with this ( now a department of the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt ) to Bavaria in 1814.
