Ostra Vetere

Ostra Vetere is a municipality with 3371 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Ancona, Marche.

The town is located 49 km from Ancona to 250 m above sea level. The municipality covers 29.86 km ². Patron saint of the village is the holy John the Baptist.

The neighboring municipalities are Barbara, Castelleone, Corinaldo, Montecarotto, Ostra and Serra de 'Conti.

Within the municipal area there is legal vineyards for the production of Verdicchio dei Castelli known white wine di Jesi.

History

Ostra Vetere bears its present name since March 19, 1882 by royal decree. Formerly called the city Montenovo; the name is first detectable in the 12th century.

On the territory of the municipality are the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Ostra, whose archaeological remains are currently being investigated.

Culture

  • The birthday of the Holy Pasquale Baylon on May 17, to which many pilgrims are expected, is every year celebrated by festivities that find a moving fireworks over the city its conclusion.
  • The Fiera de Giovanni Battista, a festival in honor of the local saint is celebrated on June 24.
  • The museum " Maria Crocefissa Satellico " in the former convent of Santa Lucia Clarissen originated at the request of the community and the parish of Santa Maria. It shows the history of the community Montenovo, Ostra Vetere today. The museum was opened on 26 January 2008. The municipal library is housed there.
