Cupramontana

Cupra Montana is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 4844 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Ancona in the Marche. The community is located about 45 kilometers southwest of Ancona and borders the province of Macerata. Cupra Montana is part of the Comunità montana dell'Esino Frasassi. The northwestern boundary of the municipality is the esino.

History

Cupra was a fertility goddess Piceno and Umbrians. The Roman settlement was a municipium of some importance. Under reign of the Duke of Spoleto, the village was known as Masaccio. From the 13th century it belonged to the Papal States. With the unification of Italy, then the town was returned to the ancient name.
