San Paolo di Jesi

San Paolo di Jesi is a municipality with 905 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Ancona in the Marche region of Italy. It is located in the center of the Castelli di Jesi, the growing area of Verdicchio wine.

Geography

San Paolo di Jesi, located about 12 km southwest of Jesi, and 40 km west of the provincial capital city of Ancona. The place is located on a hill above the river esino, at an altitude of 224 m. Neighboring municipalities are Cupra Montana, Jesi, Monte Roberto and Staffolo.

Traffic

The village is connected by state road SS 76 to Ancona. A bus line connects San Paolo di Jesi with Staffolo and Jesi.

History

San Paolo was mentioned in a document in 1275 for the first time, as a castle of the area of Jesi. With Jesi, under whose administration it was, it came in the 15th century to the Papal States. In the Napoleonic period of 1806-1812, it was merged with the neighboring municipality of Monte Roberto, during the Fascist period from 1928 to that of Staffolo. Since 1946, San Paolo is a separate municipality again.

Attractions

In the historical center, the parish church of San Paolo is from the late 18th century and the Palazzo Comunale with its tower, Torre Civico from the same period.
