Palfau until the end of 2014 a municipality with 396 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the north of Styria in the judicial district or county Lienzen. As part of the municipality of structural reform in Styria it is merged in 2015 with the communities Gams, Mooslandl and ( lying in the district of Leoben ) community Hieflau, the new community will continue the name Mooslandl. This is based on the Styrian community structure reform law - StGsrG. The boundaries of the districts Liezen and Leoben are up to the effective date of the merger changed so that the new church will lie entirely in the district Lienzen.

Geography

Geographical Location

Palfau is in the lower Salzatal, on a broad river terrace on both sides of the Salza, which has been cut here to the mouth of the river Enns in Großreifling into a deep gorge.

The northern part of the municipality up to the Lower Austrian border at the crest of the Gamssteins (1774 m above sea level. A. ) belongs to the Ybbstaler Alps, the eastern part up to the Hochkar (1808 m above sea level. A. ) to the Lassingalpen, the area south of the Salza for high Schwab group (cold - wall group).

Community structure

The community Palfau has only one cadastral and counts as a village.

The long-drawn- place Palfau together form the rotting Upper Palfau ( 47.71111111111114.813611111111574 ⊙ ) and the scattered houses Lower Palfau ( ⊙ 47.70305555555614.793055555556550 ) and Palfau links ( 47.702514.798055555556550 ⊙ ), the former on the north, on the right bank of the Salza Salza L714 road, the latter left on the B25 Erlauftal road, accessible via a Fußgehersteg, otherwise the detour over to the sergeant ( 47.70916666666714.821111111111538 ⊙ ), where the two meet streets of the valley sides. The Kirchberg of Palfau lies between Lower and Upper Palfau Palfau. Numerous other individual layers, the valley Karl Bauer, Hämmerl, Grubbauer, Birkner, Schneßl, Lackner, mining distributed in its environment before the church, Moar, on the watch after church, Ghf. History

Palfaus recent historical significance goes back especially to its location on the Iron Road: Their main branch was the old post road Kommerzialbank iron ore - Steyr, today's B 115 in the Enns Valley. In Großreifling chain an important side route along the Salza vote on the three important hardware cities Gresten, Scheibbs and Purgstall at the Erlauf were (or Scheibbs, Purgstall, Gostling ) supplied with pig iron, and was therefore called Dreimärkter - iron street (now the B 25). Originally there was in Mendling, at the Styrian - Austrian border, the customs and toll station ( the iron toll house in Mendling is now a listed building ). The coat of arms was granted September 19, 1988. The wall is built on the Salza the attachment with gate dar. hoe and rafter hook relate to the clearing of the area Palfauer and centuries -long forestry work and timber floating on the Salza. The colors silver / red are the the Admont.

In addition to farms and some commercial enterprises, tourism is one of an important source of localities in Palfau.

Culture and sights

Structures

  • Remains of a fortified castle (ruins), which had been built below Palfau. It was built because the Turkish threat in 1529 (compare the Türkenschanze at Gaflenz ). It was remounted in the 17th century because of rebel Upper Austrian peasants, and French occupation. Because of the-way location, they had never been attacked or destroyed, but was partly removed ( for house construction, etc. ) and partly left to nature. Be reminded also of today's local name salza up to the guard at the entrance to the gorge.
  • The local church was probably originally a fortified church. Remains of a Wehrbemauerung are in the current appearance of the Tomahügels, on which it stands, recognizable. The present church is a recent one.

Natural Monuments

A Situated on the southern slope of the Hochkar giant karst spring is known as the water hole. The source and the gorge below are visited annually by thousands of guests.
