Action
In episodenhaftem dance and epic life of a destitute family is told in the countryside of Bengal. On a plot with two houses of the father Harihar, the mother Sarbajaya whose daughter Durga and the old aunt Indira life. The son Apu is born here.
Harihar is constantly without steady income and sees his true destiny as a writer. Apu is about 5 years old and goes to the village school at a dealer, nothing has changed on family relations in recent years. In their poverty, the depressed Sarbajaya dreams of a life in the city of Benares.
After an argument about her uselessness the old Indira assumes and only comes back after a long time to Durga Puja, because she feels sick and wants to spend her last days in the old house. Harihar leaves the family for an indefinite time, to make money as a priest. After 5 months, he receives a letter announcing his return. A friend of Durga is married, she dreams of their own "good" husband.
In the pouring rain storm of the monsoon to Durga cold; her fever is rising and they did not survive the night. The storm has ravaged the land.
Hari finally comes home and finds Sarbajaya apathetic and speechless. When he shows the gift for Durga ( a new Sari ), collapses the mother, her pain is symbolized by a high, shrill sound of a stringed instrument.
You leave the place of their ancestors and move to Benares. A snake crawling in the house, it is abandoned. On an ox cart the family drives away.
Background
Pather Panchali Satyajit Ray 's directorial debut and also the first part of the Apu trilogy. Ray worked four years on this film, as he always ran out of money. About relationships finally succeeded to secure funding through the state of West Bengal. The film was the first Indian film ( on the Cannes Film Festival in 1956 ) attracted attention in the West and its director gave international recognition. Poetic- realistic and human vividly the hardships of life in the country are shown. The narrative of the film is kept at a very slow pace. This corresponds to the speed of life far away from civilization and gives the viewer enough time to empathize with the strange world of rural India.
