Phillips Idowu

Phillips Idowu MBE ( born December 30, 1978 at the London Borough of Hackney ) is a British triple jumper, the 2009 World Cup and 2010 European champion won.

Life

After a fourth place finish at the European Junior Championships in 1997 and a fifth place finish at the U-23 European Championships in 1999 Idowu reached at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney for the first time a grand finale in the adult class, with 17.08 meters he finished in sixth place. 2001 Idowu finished at the World Championships in Edmonton ninth place. At the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, he managed to longest jump of his career, at least outdoors. For England starting, he won with 17,68 m silver behind his compatriot Jonathan Edwards, who reached 17.86 m. A month later at the European Championships in Munich were unable to match their performance from both Manchester. While Idowu reach 17.54 m in qualifying, but in the final he had to deal with 16,92 m and fifth modest, Edwards was third behind Christian Olsson and Charles Friedek. The 2003 season had Idowu with a knee injury omit, 2004 and 2005 he went to, but reached no placement at major championships.

His comeback Idowu at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, with 17.45 meters he had a foot ahead of second-placed South African Godfrey Mokoena Khotso. At the European Championships in Gothenburg in 2006, he once again took the fifth place with 17.02 m four years after Munich. Half a year later at the IAAF European Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 2007 the British scored a double victory; Idowu won with 17.56 m in front of Nathan Douglas with 17.47 m. At the 2007 World Championships in Osaka Idowu was sixth with 17,09 m.

Much further he came at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia in 2008, 17.75 m, he jumped a new personal best and had won 28 centimeters ahead of the Cuban David Giralt Arnie, of silver. At the Olympic Games in 2008 Idowu won with 17.62 m silver medal behind Nelson Évora. At the World Championships in Berlin in 2009, he improved his seven -year-old personal best by five centimeters and won the world title in front of Nelson Évora. At the end of the season he was voted European Athlete of the Year.

A year later he triumphed again at the European Championships 2010 in Barcelona and improved his personal best to 17.81 m. In 2011 he won silver at the World Championships. At the Olympic Games in London, he was not the qualification before the home crowd.

Idowu is 1,92 m tall and weighs 89 kg. He starts for the Belgrave Harriers. His image was based for many years more to ever-changing hair colors and piercings than on large competitor qualities, but exactly this he showed in 2007 and 2008, at least in the hall.
