Potenza Picena

Picena is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 16,079 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Macerata in the Marche region. The municipality is situated approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Ancona and about 15 kilometers northeast of Macerata.

History

The Franciscan monk Gerard of Lunel ( born in 1275 ) suffered a breakdown in 1298 at Monte Santo. With his canonization by Pope Benedict XIV, he became the patron saint of epileptics. Later Monte Santo was renamed Picena.

Traffic

The main town of the municipality is located a few kilometers from the Adriatic sea. The district of Porto Potenza Picena right on the water. North of the village runs the Strada Statale 571 The Strada Statale 16 Adriatica crosses as well as the municipality as the Autostrada A14. In Porto Potenza Picena is also a connection to the Adriatic railway. The station is Picena - Montelupone.

Potenza has partnerships with the English community Burford in Oxfordshire and with the Irish town of Templemore.
