Matelica

Matelica ( in the regional dialect Materga ) is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 10,187 inhabitants ( as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Macerata in the Marche region. The community is located about 36 kilometers west of Macerata and about 54 kilometers northeast of Perugia on esino, not far from the church which has its source. Matelica is immediately adjacent to the province of Ancona.

History

The foundation of the city dates back to the Piceno, who settled here. Colonized the area for more than 4000 years. The city's name itself is probably of Celtic origin. In Pliny the settlement as Matilica Matilicatis is mentioned. The title of Città leads the place since the ceremony by Pope Benedict XIV in 1761.

Economy and Transport

Matelica is home to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Camerino. At the same time the community is part of the wine-growing region, from the Verdicchio (DOC) comes.

Passing through the municipality, the Strada Statale 256 Muccese of Muccia after Gattuccio. In addition there is a railway station on the route from Civitanova Marche Fabriano.
