The Qatari Riyal (Arabic ريال قطري, DMG Riyal qaṭarī ) is the currency of the Gulf State of Qatar, he is since 1980 largely in proportion 3.64 to 1, pegged to the U.S. dollar. A Qatari Riyal is divided into 100 dirhams ( درهم, DMG dirham ).

The name derives from the Spanish Riyal Real, the currency in Spain was for several centuries, (derived from the Spanish rey = king). The riyal is a currency of Qatar since 1966 until 1973 as a common currency with the Trucial States, with the exception of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Previously, from 1959, the Gulf Rupee in use and for a short time in 1966 the Saudi Riyal.

Are currently being considered to replace the riyal by a common currency of the Gulf States.

Coins and banknotes

The Central Bank of Qatar are notes from a value of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 riyals, coins are in denominations of 25 and 50 dirham in circulation.
