Rick Vaive

Richard Claude "Rick" Vaive ( born May 14, 1949 in Ottawa, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player ( Right Wing ) and coach, from 1979 to 1992 for the Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres National Hockey League as well as the Birmingham Bulls in the World Hockey Association played.

Career

While Rick Vaive grew up in Ottawa, it was his dream one day for one of the Canadian teams to play in the National Hockey League and win the Stanley Cup. At the Sherbrooke Castors in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, he spent his time in the junior classes. After participating in the Junior World Championships in 1978, he signed a contract with the Birmingham Bulls. The team from the World Hockey Association could not afford expensive players and sat so young hopefuls.

NHL Entry Draft 1979 Vancouver Canucks of its body-hugging and offensive style of play were so impressed that they picked him in the first round in fifth place. After half a season in which he collected 21 points and 111 penalty minutes, the enthusiasm was gone and they gave him, together with Bill Derlago from the Toronto Maple Leafs. In return, the Canucks received with Tiger Williams the player who collected the most penalty minutes in the NHL, and Jerry Buttler.

In Toronto, he was one of the stars of the team. He was in his second full season in 1980/81 in Toronto, the first player of the Maple Leafs, who scored more than 50 goals in a season. This brand he was able to exceed three years in a row. The team counted at the time the weakest in the league. As the Maple Leafs often missed the playoffs, he was able to start in 1982 and 1985 for the Canadian team at the World Cup. After a very successful season 1986/87 Toronto tried once again to rebuild their squad and this time was also the team captain affected. Together with Steve Thomas and Bob McGill, he was transferred to the Chicago Blackhawks to undertake Al Secord and Ed Olczyk.

For one and a half years he played in Chicago and scored in his 106 games for the Blackhawks 55 goals. In December 1988 he moved for Adam Creighton to the Buffalo Sabres. There he played a few more years, but it was during the 1991/92 season often also sent to the farm team, the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League. After the end of the season his contract ran out and he signed again with the Vancouver Canucks. However, he came only to operations in the AHL with the Hamilton Canucks, where he ended his active career after this season.

Vaive coached for several years, the South Carolina Stingrays of the East Coast Hockey League before joining as head coach of the Saint John Flames of the AHL. In the summer of 2002, he moved to the Mississauga IceDogs to supervise the junior team in the Ontario Hockey League.
