Rocca Pietore

Rocca Pietore is a municipality with 1319 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Italian province of Belluno, Veneto Region southwest of Cortina d' Ampezzo. A part of the municipality is the ski resort at the foot of the Marmolada Malga Ciapela. Neighboring municipalities are Alleghe, Agordo, Canazei, Colle Santa Lucia, Falcade, Livinallongo del Col di Lana, Pozza di Fassa, San Tomaso Agordino Soraga and Vallada Agordina.

Population

History

The beginnings of settlement history are shrouded in mystery. You may already have one Lombards settlement, which included the upper valley of Avisio and the Fodom. In the High Middle Ages to the late 14th century Rocca Pietore belonged to the diocese of Brixen Tyrol and. 1395 it fell into the dependence of the city of Belluno and thus belonged to the Republic of Venice, which it, however, a broad, shaped by the Ladin cultural autonomy retained, which was codified in 1417 with the Statute of the Magnifica Comunità Rocca.

After the Napoleonic conquest of the Venetian Republic in 1806 and the Congress of Vienna in 1815 Rocca Pietore fell to Austria in 1866 and returned to Italy.

The Serres Canyon from Sottoguda

The Serres Canyon from Sottoguda is about 2 km long canyon with about 50 meters high walls between Sottoguda and Malga Ciapela. By only 8-10 m wide gorge flows the torrent Pettorina. The gorge is walkable or drivable with a tourist train.
