Rochefort is a Belgian municipality in the Walloon Region with 12,474 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). It is situated in the Ardennes and is next to the main town namensgebendem from ten other districts.

Dinant located 24 kilometers north-west, Namur 40 km north-west Brussels and about 90 miles northwest.

History

Rochefort owes its name to a fixture ( rocha fortis ), which had been built by the first men Rochefort, Montaigu of the family, on a rocky spur. Castle and the place were the center of a Seigneurie, which was collected in 1494 by Emperor Maximilian I to a county (see County Rochefort ( Famennian ) ). This was from 1544 owned by the family of Stolberg, before they came in 1574 to the dynasty of Löwenstein- Wertheim.

In the district Jemelle four kilometers east of the main town is the nearest railway station on the line Namur - Arlon and Liege - Luxembourg. In addition to the transport trains stop here and intercity trains of the relation Brussels - Luxembourg and € Citys relation Brussels - Zurich.

The airport Brussels - Charleroi and Liège Airport are the nearest regional airports with partial international connections.

Attractions

The town is overlooked by the ruins of the former Castle of the Counts. Since 2010, the area is used as a convalescent home for sick children and is therefore visible only for groups by appointment and accompanied by a guide. In the district of Lavaux -Sainte -Anne is well-preserved castle of the same.

In Rochefort is also founded in the 13th century Abbey of Notre -Dame-de -Saint- Rémy of the Trappists. In the Abbey, the Trappist " Rochefort " has been brewed since the early 19th century.

The Loreto cave ( Grotte de Lorette ) was discovered in 1865 and is open to visitors for tours open.

In Rochefort Belgian botanist François Crépin (1830-1903) was born.
