History

The diocese of Paderborn was 799 by Pope Leo III. and the then Frankish king Charlemagne built the Great. Later it became part of the ecclesiastical province of Mainz. The acquired during the Middle Ages secular dominion of the bishop was the Prince-Bishopric of Paderborn.

After the fall of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, the bishopric was restored in 1821 with the Bull of Pope Pius VII De salute animarum and assigned to the ecclesiastical province of Cologne. The boundaries of the diocese changed greatly.

The parts of the Apostolic Vicariate of the North, which lay in the Prussian province of Saxony and the Thuringian duchies were incorporated into the diocese of Paderborn, but were geographically separated from the core area. In the West, the former Electorate of Cologne Sauerland now became part of the diocese of Paderborn.

Due to the 1929 Concordat concluded with Prussia in 1930, the diocese by the Bull of Pope Pius XI. Pastoralis officii nostri raised to an archbishopric. As of July 23, 1973, located in the eastern part of the Archdiocese of GDR was an apostolic administration. Then the archbishop's administration rested for this area until German reunification. The diocese of Hildesheim, which was since 1930 part of the Central German ecclesiastical province, was suffragan of the newly established Archdiocese of Hamburg.

Paderborn Cathedral and Metropolitan Chapter
