Roman Catholic Diocese of Astorga

The Diocese of Astorga (Latin: Dioecesis Asturicensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Astorga. It is located in northwestern Spain and, with the dioceses of León and Santander province to the Church of Oviedo.

Territory

The jurisdiction of the diocese extends over the Leonese Comarcas Maragatería and El Bierzo ( 6299 km ²), ourensische Valdeorras (1700 km ² ) and the zamoranischen Sanabria, La Carballeda ( 3526 km ²), Valles de Benavente and part of Aliste. Previously she stretched out until after Miranda do Douro (Portugal).

History

Astorga is probably the oldest diocese in Spain. There is historical evidence of its existence in the year 254, but one suspects its founding early as the 2nd century.

Middle of the 5th century brought the hl. Toribio of Astorga, who fought against the Priscillianist heresy and destroyed by the Gothic king Theodoric temple rebuilt, of Jerusalem, a fragment of the Holy Cross with that now in the Monastery of St.. Turibius is revered by Liébana.
