Sacro Monte di Ghiffa

The pilgrimage with a group of chapels of Sacro Monte di Ghiffa is a pilgrimage site near the town Ghiffa Lake Maggiore in Piedmont. It is registered since 2003 as part of the Sacri Monti in the list of World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Environment

The Sacro Monte ( 360 m) is located in a hilly, wooded setting. 200 acres of wooded hills are designated as a nature reserve ( Reserva naturale Holy Trinity Ghiffra ). It rises to about 700 meters, the highest point is the Monte Cargiago. The forest consists mainly of chestnut. In addition, oak, maple, ash and birch find. The reserve is accessible by various marked hiking trails.

Buildings

Before the construction of the Holy Mountain there was a small oratory, which was dedicated to the mystery of the Trinity and was located at a vantage point on the Piedmontese banks of Lake Maggiore, which has always been a meeting place for locals.

1647 Chapel of the Coronation of the Virgin was built, while the existing under a long archway next to the Sanctuary Via Crucis has its origins in the eighteenth century. Two other chapels, one of them are a bit remote, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and the Biblical forefather Abraham.
