Snake River Valley AVA

The Snake River Valley AVA is a wine -growing region in the southwest of the U.S. state of Idaho as well as in Eastern Oregon. The designation as a protected designation of origin is the result of the Idaho Grape Growers Community petition and Wine Producers Commission and the Idaho Department of Commerce and Labor. The petition was granted on 9 March 2007.

Location

The recognized vineyards of the area of ​​the Snake River Valley AVA is distributed among the located in southwestern Idaho counties Ada, Adams, Boise, Canyon, Elmore, Gem, Gooding, Jerome, Owyhee, Payette, Twin Falls and Washington, as well as nearby the Eastern Oregon County Malheur and Baker. The eponymous Snake River forms in this area, the border between the two states. To use the name of the appellation, at least 85 percent of Rebmaterials used for a wine from this defined zone must come.

Climate

The appellation Snake River Valley AVA is located on the same latitude as the better known, further east wine region Umpqua Valley AVA in Oregon. The vineyards of the Snake River Valley, however, are at an altitude of 800 to 1000 m above sea level. Thus, the temperature difference between day and night is very pronounced. In addition, the mitigating influence of the 640 km distant Pacific Ocean is less noticeable.
