Gem County, Idaho
Gem County is a county located in the state of Idaho in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Emmett.
Geography
The County is located in western Idaho, is about 35 kilometers from Oregon and has an area of 1465 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Adams County, Valley County, Boise County, Ada County, Canyon County, Payette County and Washington County. In the south the county extends into the plane of the Snake River Plain.
History
Gem County was formed on March 19, 1915 from parts of Boise County and Canyon County.
Demographic data
According to the census of 2000, there were 15,181 people in Gem County. Of these, 199 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 5,539 households and 4,176 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 93.79 percent White, 0.73 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.07 percent African American, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 3.16 percent from other races groups; 1.83 percent are descended from two or more races. 6.92 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,539 households out of which 34.0 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 63.4 percent were married couples living together. 8.4 percent were single mothers and 24.6 percent were non-families. 20.8 percent of all households and 9.9 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.12.
28.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.6 percent 18-24 Years, 25.3 percent between 25 and 44, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years. 15.6 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 96.7 males.
The median household income was $ 34,460, and the median income for a family $ 40,195. Males have a median income of $ 31,036, women $ 20,755. The per capita income was $ 15,340. 11.6 percent of families and 13.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
