Benewah County, Idaho
Benewah County is a county located in the state of Idaho in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) St. Maries.
Geography
The County is located in the north- west of Idaho, on the west by Washington and has an area of 2030 square kilometers, of which 20 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Kootenai County, Shoshone County, Latah County and Whitman County and Spokane County in Washington.
History
Benewah County was formed on January 23, 1915 from parts of Kootenai County. It was named after a chief of the Coeur d' Alene.
Demographic data
According to the census in 2000 lived in Benewah County 9,171 people in 3,580 households and 2,538 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 88.66 percent White, 0.12 percent African American, 8.94 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.25 percent from other races groups; 1.82 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.55 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 3,580 households out of which 31.3 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.4 percent were married couples living together. 7.7 percent were single mothers and 29.1 percent were non-families. 24.0 percent of all households and 10.4 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.99.
26.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.8 percent 18-24 Years, 25.4 percent between 25 and 44, 26.6 percent between 45 and 64 years. 14.2 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 104.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 101.1 males.
The median household income was $ 31,517, and the median income for a family $ 36,000. Males had a median income of $ 35,097, women $ 20,288. The per capita income was $ 15,285. 10.5 percent of families and 14.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
