Bear Lake County is a county located in the state of Idaho in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Paris.

Geography

The County is located in the southeastern corner of Idaho, on the east by Wyoming, south to Utah and has an area of ​​2718 square kilometers, of which 202 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Caribou County, Lincoln County, Wyoming, Rich County, Utah and Franklin County.

History

Bear Lake County was formed on January 5, 1875 from parts of Oneida County. It was named after the nearby Bear Lake, a lake.

The first settlers were smaller tribes of the Shoshone. The first white men in 1818 were probably some trappers and scouts who explored the area. 1819 outsourced Donald McKenzie on a lake and gave him because of the black bears that were found there, here, the name Black Bear Lake.

In 1836 a small mission to Christianize the Indians was established and in 1841 the Oregon Trail passed through this area. 1863 sent Brigham Young, the second President and Prophet of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints, the first Mormons to settle here.
