Shoshone County, Idaho

Shoshone County is a county located in the state of Idaho in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Wallace.

Geography

The County is located in the northwest of Idaho, adjacent to the northeast Montana and has an area of 6826 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Bonner County, Kootenai County, Benewah County, Latah County and Clearwater County.

History

Shoshone County was formed on February 4, 1864 as the original County. It was named after the Native American tribe of the Shoshone.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Shoshone County, 13,771 people in 5,906 households and 3,856 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 95.84 percent White, 0.11 percent African American, 1.52 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.49 percent from other races groups; 1.74 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.93 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 5,906 households out of which 26.7 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.7 percent were married couples living together. 8.1 percent were single mothers and 34.7 percent were non-families. 29.4 percent of all households and 13.6 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.82 persons.

22.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 6.7 percent 18-24 Years, 25.5 percent between 25 and 44, 27.4 percent between 45 and 64 years. 17.4 per cent were 65 years or older. The average age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 99.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 97.0 males.

The median household income was $ 28,535, and the median income for a family $ 35,694. Males had a median income of $ 30,439, women $ 18,831. The per capita income was $ 15,934. 12.4 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
