South American Footballer of the Year

A South American Footballer of the Year was first elected in 1971 under the auspices of appearing in Caracas Venezuelan newspaper El Mundo. Here, each South American players could be chosen. By 1985, the elected of El Mundo players are considered South American Footballer of the Year. The election took place annually until 1992, but since 1986, organized from El País (Montevideo) vote for the " Rey del Fútbol de América " emerged footballers were considered to be South America's official Player of the Year. El País journalist interviewed the whole American continent. Since then, only South American players of South American ( and Mexican ) Clubs can be selected.
