For the first time, seven of the eight finalists came less than a minute to the finish. While Olympic champion van der Burgh two records ( Olympic record in the semifinals, Olympic and world record in the final ) improved, the number 4 to the finish Come Ungar Gyurta could improve the Hungarian record in this competition three times. After reviewing film footage of the race has been suggested that winner van der Burgh made three dolphin leg blows after the turn. Allowed is only one leg shock. However, since no underwater camera was installed, the judge had no recourse for disqualification. Van der Burgh admitted in an interview with the Australian newspaper Sydney Morning Herald, to have resorted to these unauthorized leg strokes.
